Prevention is the key to a healthy mouth. During your six monthly check-up we will check the gums as well as the teeth. We will review the hygiene habits at home and help you with tooth brushing and flossing. We will scale and polish the teeth so that they feel clean and we will remove any stains so that they look white and bright again. Dental hygiene treatment can be complemented by tooth whitening if you feel that your teeth look yellow or dull in colour and you want to brighten them up.
As well as the aesthetic benefits of polishing teeth, regular hygiene therapy is clinically proven to reduce the risk of periodontal (gum) disease and helps treat those who already have this condition.
If you suffer from bleeding gums, even whilst brushing your teeth, the main cause of this is plaque deposit. Plaque is a combination of food and bacterial build up, which irritates gums, causing them to bleed. Insufficient cleaning at home (including a lack of cleaning between the teeth) will lead to bleeding gums (gingivitis). If left untreated, this can lead to periodontal disease, an aggressive disease which can affect the supporting bone around teeth and lead to mobile (wobbly) teeth and premature tooth loss.
Research has shown that periodontal disease may increase the risk of coronary artery disease and stroke. Also those patients with Diabetes are more prone to aggressive periodontal disease. It is imperative that these higher risk patients attend regularly for oral hygiene care.
We see adults and also children for professional teeth cleaning. Children love having their teeth polished and we find that they are more likely to look after their teeth in between check-ups if they have regular scaling and polishing.
