Gum disease is the leading cause for tooth loss in the UK, with at least 50% of the population experiencing some form of the condition in their lifetime. Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. It begins with plaque accumulation. Plaque that stays on the teeth more than 2-3 days can become hard which is difficult to remove and can only be removed by professional cleaning. If the issue is not addressed early, inflammation of the gums can develop, otherwise known as gingivitis. Gingivitis may lead to more serious, irreversible and destructive forms of periodontal disease, otherwise known as periodontitis. Untreated periodontitis can result in loose or drifting teeth and if this is not addressed will eventually lead to tooth loss.
The health of your gums has been shown to affect your general health. Active gum disease has been associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke with research to show that bacteria responsible for gum disease can affect the heart. There are also more problems affecting diabetic patients who struggle to control their blood sugar levels. Furthermore, emerging evidence has suggested that bacteria involved in gum disease are also found in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, as well as a range of other health conditions still under investigation.
Bleeding Gums FAQS
What is the main cause of bleeding gums?
The main cause of this inflammation and accompanying bleeding gums is poor oral hygiene. Bacterial plaque forms on teeth that are poorly brushed or not brushed at all. The groove between the teeth and gums (sulcus) is particularly at risk.
What are the warning signs?
Bleeding gums is a warning sign, indicating gum inflammation (gingivitis) or inflammation of the periodontium (periodontitis). At worst, tooth loss is the outcome. Healthy gums do not bleed: they are pale pink, firm and have a stippled appearance. Diseased inflamed gums however are dark red, soft and sensitive. They bleed easily and can be accompanied by bad breath.
What negatively contributes to bleeding gums?
In addition to poor oral hygiene, the risk factors for the development of bleeding gums, gingivitis and periodontal disease are smoking, diabetes mellitus, hormonal changes during pregnancy or prolonged breathing through the mouth.
Receding Gums FAQS
Why are my gums receding?
Gum recession is a fairly common condition that can arise for a multitude of reasons including an overzealous brushing habit, or possibly a sign of underlying periodontal disease.
What is gum recession?
It can be defined as the loss of soft tissue (pink gums) exposing the root underneath and creating the appearance of longer teeth. The root is composed of dentine, which is generally softer than the hard enamel that covers our teeth and is also yellower in colour. This colour difference, along with the appearance of longer teeth can create aesthetic issues, especially if the tooth or teeth affected are visible when you smile. Furthermore, exposed dentine can at times be a common cause of sensitivity to cold/hot food and drink, making day to day activities difficult for some. Being softer than enamel, it can make the tooth more susceptible to wear and cavities, leading to further complications.
What treatments are available?
We are able to manage patients with receding gums, with a view to halt the progression as well as carry out periodontal plastic surgery procedures to help improve the appearance of some of these gum related issues.
