During your six-monthly check-up...
our hygienist will assess the health of your gums and teeth.
Prevention is the key to a healthy mouth. Visiting our dental hygienist will not only aesthetically improve your smile but help reduce the risk of periodontal (gum) disease.
If you suffer from bleeding gums, even whilst brushing your teeth, the main cause of this is plaque deposit. Dental plaque is a combination of food and bacterial build up, which irritates gums, causing them to bleed. Insufficient cleaning at home (including a lack of cleaning between the teeth) will lead to bleeding gums (gingivitis). If left untreated, this can lead to periodontal disease, an aggressive disease which can affect the supporting bone around teeth and lead to mobile (wobbly) teeth and premature tooth loss.
Research has shown that periodontal disease may increase the risk of coronary artery disease, stroke and dementia. Patients with diabetes are more prone to aggressive periodontal disease. It is imperative that all patients attend regularly for oral hygiene care.
We see adults and also children for professional teeth cleaning. Children love having their teeth polished and we find that they are more likely to look after their teeth in between check-ups if they have regular scaling and polishing, as it empowers them to take more care of their little teeth.
